THE STORY OF BBC WEBWISE FOR AFRICA

On the UK version of Webwise, users are supported in web browsing and making transitions from page to page within existing websites such as www.bbc.co.uk. This provided a good starting point to browsing and built user confidence. The BBC site alone did not seem a suitable example site for the African version of Webwise. Therefore suitable sites needed to be identified:

Ø       relevant to user groups such as African educators going online for the first time

Ø       well ordered and have practical resources available with pan-African relevance

Ø       stable so the URL address is guaranteed to be stable over a period of years

Ø       fresh and maintained for its life time, therefore enforcing relevancy and encourage repeated visits

A range of suitable sites were suggested from Imfundo partners. These included:

·             www.schoolnetafrica.net

·             www.world-links.org

·             www.adeanet.org

·             www.kabissa.org

·             www.africaonline.com

·             www.uneca.org

The sites that were put forward offer relevant, well-organised material often available in multiple languages and directed towards
educators, middle managers as well as policy makers in education.
