THE STORY OF BBC WEBWISE FOR AFRICA

Key Issues

The scale of the reversioning of Webwise was dependent on the resources and time available to make the amendments. The main factor that affected the range of changes was the finite resources available. Imfundo made 25% available for the production costs of the original disk. (which was originally funded by the Learning Skills Council)

Outcomes & Recommendations

An assessment of the original Webwise disc formed part of an evaluation of ICT skills based software, that was undertaken for Imfundo (see http://imfundo.digitalbrain.com/imfundo/web/papers/ictreview/?verb=view).The evaluation found that Webwise’s structure, interface and style was suitable for the intended core users and no changes would be needed in terms of structure and interface.

Feedback from the African stakeholders suggested that adaptations to Webwise should focus on specific content issues (e.g. making more relevant the illustrative examples) or with ‘look and feel issues’  (e.g. presentation of the packaging).

Most of recommended changes were recorded and implementation of these were completed to the script, although the scale and resource implications of some of these changes were greater than perhaps envisaged. A third of screens had been modified in some way. These modifications included:

Text  - where words/picture on the screen have been adapted but voice over remains the same.

Voice Over – in situations where the word and pictures have been amended.

Picture – changes to animation and illustrative examples that are particularly to the African context.

Programming - Re-programming of the interactive animations involving the structure of the animation.
