A final element was included when it was
realised that there would be some additional space on the CD. Alasdair Unwin, who was working for DFID Tanzania on the Roll
Back Malaria programme, and had initiated the suggestion that Imfundo’s
partners might be able to help the Tanzanian Government, had previously worked
with a film production company, the Mediae Trust (www.mediae.org),
on the making of a short but moving film about malaria (called Malaria: a
mother’s story) for the Kenyan National Malaria Control Programme.
David Campbell and Andrew Gosling of Mediae, then gave freely of their
time to work with Alasdair to reversion this film into six short learning
videos, together with a commentary on how these could be used for training
purposes. Matt Shard of Automatic
Television then digitised this material at no cost for inclusion on the CD.
The resultant CD therefore includes the
following materials:
- Tanzania’s
National Guidelines for Diagnosis and Treatment of Uncomplicated and
Severe Malaria, in both Kiswahili and English, in a fully searchable
browser
- Flash
animation versions of the seven Shinda Malaria pamphlets in Kiswahili,
providing information about the causes and prevention of malaria
- The
video, Malaria: a mother’s story, divided into six learning
sections on: early and effective case management; access to quality
medicines and knowledge of suppliers; Insecticide Treated mosquito Nets (ITNs);
referral of malaria cases; Intermittent Preventive Treatment (IPT) for
pregnant women; and training and supervision
- .pdf
files of all of the documents, readable in, and printable from, Adobe
Acrobat (PDF Reader installable from the CD).
The development and production of this CD
reflects closely the partnership principles upon which Imfundo builds as it
seeks to respond to DFID Country Offices requests for support to African
governments. All of Imfundo’s
partners involved in this work, as well as others who were committed to
ensuring that this resource could be made available for use in East Africa,
gave freely of their time and resources.
The result is something that none of us could have done by ourselves,
and we hope that by enabling it to be produced Imfundo has helped to add value
to this process.
The CD can be freely copied and
distributed in Africa, and is available both from the National Malaria Control
Programme in the Ministry of Health in Tanzania, and from Imfundo.
